STUDIO THEATRE: “The Wreck of the Deutschland”

Poet, playwright, and performer Brett Alan Dewing returns to Hamilton, the city of his soul, with a dramatic recitation of the long poem “The Wreck of the Deutschland” by Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins.
A towering masterpiece of sacred poetry, “The Wreck of the Deutschland” finds the poet wrestling with the problem of pain, the strange mercy of God, and the majesty with which Christ bridges the two. It is the true story of a shipwreck in which 5 Franciscan nuns lost their lives off the coast of the UK, but perhaps the highly-structured poem is more about the inevitable failure of putting language to the ways of God. The further Hopkins goes down the maze of trying to understand divine mastery and mercy, the more his language splinters even as his spirit takes flight.
The performance lasts approximately 45 minutes.
